the trip to fresno prep school

i woke up at around 7am, and went for the team breakfast at the lobby. but something was different about this day. we were going to do something different, our coach has told us the night before that we would be going to a prep school in Fresno, to meet and discuss about soccer to the kids. i was so excited because i love children, i have always wanted to be a pediatrician. So during the breakfast we all talked about what we were going to do to entertain the kids, so i came up with the idea that we show them some tricks involve in soccer like joggling the ball, heading, and dribbling, so we all agreed to that. So at about 11am we left the hotel to the prep school, it took us about 15mins drive to get to Fresno prep school. So our coach met with a woman , i think its the headmistress and about 5mins later, we saw surrounded by at least 50 to 70 kids of about 5 to 7 years old. it was so nice to see the kids around and seeing the eagerness in their eyes trying to figure out what we are hear to do. So my coach introduced us to them and called out some of us to exhibit some drills and tricks for them. they were so overwhelmed, they felt as if they where in the circus and clapped in amusement to what we were doing. so after we finished with the exercise. we could see in the faces, how eager they wanted to play and kick the ball around. and most especially trying to do what they had seen us do.so our throw some of the ball to them and you can't begin to imagine what happened next.

strange

Something dramatic happened to me today, as i was coming back from class. i live at wynridge apartments which is like 5mins walk from the school. just a few blocks away from my apartment, this car drove pass me. it was a man, Africa American, about 5 11", and should weight about 200lbs. he suddenly stopped and reversed toward me, at first i thought he was a stranger in my neighborhood who wanted to ask for an address but i thought wrong. so he stopped and asked me to come closer, so i did. he asked me if i live around here and i said yes that i lived a couple of blocks away. so he went on saying that we was looking for a apartment, so he decided to drive around to see if he would find one. i told him that i didn't know if there was any apartment available here but i noticed something weird about the way he was looking at me. he was smiling all the time and winking his eyes at me. As i was trying to show him where the leasing office was located, he cut me short from what i was saying by asking me some very weird question like if i lived alone? where i was from? if i would like to hang around sometime with him?. i didn't understand it at first until held my hand and started feeling it. it was the weirdest experience ever. just that very moment i noticed that i was talking to a fagot, a gay and i dragged my hand off and walked away. he continued calling on me but i ignored him and just walked home. i was so pissed.

the first day in california

i woke up at about 7am but it seems as if i have been sleeping the whole day. it was so refreshing, waking up to a sunny and breezy weather of Fresno,California. So i got up, hit the shower and was ready to go experience my first day in California. we had a team meeting by 9am at the lobby, were we had breakfast and talked about the daily activities. firstly we had to practice by 1030am, then go for a lunch around 12noon. There wasn't really a lot to do because our coach restricted us from going out. he says he want us to be focused on what we are here to do and achieve the greatest goal by winning the national tournament. so we returned to the hotel after lunch and just hanged around. i was just moving from room to room trying to find sometime to do. like about 1pm we all decided to go swimming, it was so much fun. we played a lot of games, competing with one another in every event just like we do whatever we play any sport. we were in the pool for like 2 hours, and we all got tired and went back to our respective rooms to grab nab or do some homework. the only important we had to do that day, was going to the opening ceremony of the tournament, a banquet, where all the teams were introduced.

Sunday, December 6, 2009

When we landed at San Francisco Airport, California then we boarded a coach to Fresno which was actually our final destination. it was about 4 hour drive from the airport. there was so many things to see, so i barely slept. before we left Atlanta, i was told how beautiful California was so i was so eager to see it my myself. the bus drive was the best ever, because there was a lot to see on the way Fresno. i saw a lot of mountains, stretches of vineyards, corn fields, and i saw even fortunate to see the sun set beyond the mountains. it was the coolest experience ever, i was so beautiful. About 8pm we arrived at the hotel were would be lodging for the next one week. the hotel was so classy it had a swimming pool, hot tub and beautiful interior. So we lodged in; 3 to a room. the rooms were so big that we all felt so comfortable in it. At 9pm we were all settled and ready to hit the bed. so had a team meeting around 930pm and 10pm it was light out.

flying to california

its was 7 am, woke up so tired and excited because i was travelling to California for the National Men's Soccer Tournament. i went to bed late last night because i wanted to sleep all through the flight. Flying to California was a long flight for me, so sleeping would be a good idea considering the fact the i am afraid of flying. i hurriedly hit the shower, because we were supposed to meet at the gym by 730 am to board a bus to the airport. so i dressed up in a blank dress pant, a pink shirt , and a pink tie just as instructed by the head coach. so we got to the airport by 830am , started checking in our luggages it actually took time because we were 24 of us but it was fun all the way. At about 10 am everyone was done with the checking in then our coach called us together and headed everyone 20 dollars to buy food for the entire day. We so happy because it was the first time most of us was actually travelling to California and to make it more better we were flying as a team. it was a remarkable experience. Its 1030am boarding time, so we all boarded and the plane take off by 11am. It was so exciting having in the same plane all your friends and teammates. we made jokes and played game games in flight. The plane had an in flight entertaining system with games, cable tv, and the latest movies installed. Although i was tired because i didn't have enough rest the night before but i was so into the movies that i didn't sleep all through the flight. i saw transformers 2, ups, and ice age 3 and before i knew it, the pilot was announcing for landing. it was a flying experience i would live to remember because for the first time i was so secured.

WEIRD

i have come to understand, how strange things can be when it comes to friends here in the US. Here friend's gives you something and expect to receive something in return. I live in four bedroom apartment with my soccer teammates, and its so weird how they see react to some certain things. We are friends on and off the field so i expect things to be nice and cool with us, but its so ridiculous how they treat and think about me when i ask them for things. for example using their computer, asking them for food. for instance, they say i am rude because i do not excessively say "please" when i ask them for things. i mean that shouldn't be a big deal but they seems to be making a mountain out of a monster seed. In Nigeria where are come from, you can ask from your friend casually or rudely for something and they would gladly give you because you are friends. when you are friends, you are into one another like blood brothers, so the way you ask for things or treat one another should be a big deal. It so difficult to believe how people take friendship here. i have been here for four months now and i have learnt that even if people say you are friends, you still have barriers. I was talking to a friend, who i borrowed some money to last month and he was telling me how people do not borrow you money here without wanting something in return even your so called friends. i was so surprised because in Africa, we borrow and even give money to strangers who are even our friends with ease without thinking about how to to get it back. It better to give than to receive, how i wish my teammates knows this. they should be happy that someone is asking them for help and they can give.

life in the States

Growing up, we were made to believe that the United States looks like heaven. "life is easy there" they say. it was painted in a way that you think money grows on tree, like the clouds are green. so when i was coming to the United states, i had a lot of expectation. i couldn't wait to see with my own eyes the Almighty United states that i have heard and dreamt of all my life. getting to Jackson international airport, i was shocked to notice that life in the US is not different from any other part of the world. thinking that the cloud would be green and its eventually blue says it all. after living here for about 3 months, i can now tell that life isn't as easy as they pronounce it to be. you actually have to hard work to make a living , just like any other part of world. the only difference is the people, culture . economy , infrastructure, and beliefs. life in the states is fun and nice but no place can be like home.

Like the saying goes “The only permanent thing is life is change “.

Change has eventually come to the common Lagosians, the new executive

governor of Lagos state, babatunde raji fashola (SAN) is doing a tremendous

job in the life and for people of Lagos state. Just only six months in office his

been able to achieve and accomplish a lot in terms of good road , education,

poverty alleviation programme, transportation, job opportunities but to

mention a few than what any other governor has achieved in there entire

tenure in office. Nigeria political arena is so corrupt that as rich as Nigeria is

in terms of resources, being the seventh world producers of crude oil, the

poverty rate is so high that the common man can barely afford to eat two

Brief history on Nigeria.(cont..)

British was the colonial masters of Nigeria and In the 1800 the British started residing in some of the empires and kingdom, then in 1914 ,Nigeria was formed by combining the northern and southern Protectorates and the Colony of Lagos and was given the name "Nigeria" by the wife of then governor general Sir lord luggard who preside over Nigeria between 1914 to 1951. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria obtained its independence and also on October 7, 1960, Nigeria was admitted to the United Nations as the 99th member. In 1963,Nigeria became a republic and By 1964, the Nigerian army units had formed the backbone of the UN force.
In January of 1966, a group of army officers, consisting mostly of the Ibo peoples, overthrew power the regional and central government by killing prime minister. In 1967 Nigeria was split from its 4 regions of Nigeria into 12 states. however the eastern region region refused to accept the division and declared the eastern region an independent republic called the "biafra" and this led to a civil war between the biafra and the remainder of Nigeria. The war started in June 1967, and continued until Biafra surrendered on January 15, 1970 after over 1 million people had died.

In 1971, Nigeria joined the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) due the oil boom in the early 1970s brought a lot of revenue to Nigeria, this seemed to stay mostly in government. In 1976, Nigeria was further broken down into 19 states, In 1987, 2 more states were created. In 1991, 9 more states were created, leading to 30 states at the time. recently 6 more states has been created leading to now a total of 36 states.

brief history on Nigeria.

Before the 1914 there was never a country called Nigeria, the people of what is known as "Nigeria" consist of 4 different empires which was the northern empire,Benin empire, the Calabar kingdom and the Oduduwa empire. The Northern empire was composed of the borno empire, some hausa states (Zazzau, Gobir, Kano, Katsina, Birori, Daura) and some other groups (Gwari, Kebbi, Nupe, Yelwa...) in the northern part of the region then remarkably some of this states still exist to the present day. Then the Calabar kingdom which is known to be the oldest kingdom and had the oldest contact with the Europeans, it is believed to be founded around 1000 AD and has the oldest church built in Nigeria dating back to 1850. the belief of this kingdom is that the kingdom was founded by twins, and today part of this kingdom is stretched in current day Cameroon. The Oduduwa empire consist of 2 main groups, one of them was the original people which religions and culture was centered from the land of Ile-Ife; a historical and important land in the myth of the Yoruba people in current day Nigeria and the other group were the Berbels, who eventually formed the Hausa states and the Borno states. the oduduwa empire has a lot of interesting stories and legends attached to it, for instead the Oduduwa is considered the creator of the earth, and the ancestor of the Yoruba kings. According to myth, Oduduwa founded the city of Ife and dispatched his sons to establish other cities, where they reigned as priest-kings and presided over cult rituals.) lastly the Benin empire , the most powerful in the entire empires and It was very well known for it's African sculpturing.

Education in Nigeria

English is the official language , and that is what school in. In Nigeria, the school year currently runs from January to December, consists of about 3 quarters with a month between quarters, this is usually in the primary and secondary education but its different for the tertiary institutions or universities which also runs from January to December but this time consist of 2 half with 3 to 4 months between.
Some Nigerians go to nursery school in their early years. What is basically done there is teaching kids the basics like the alphabet, etc.

The first level of schooling that is attended is Primary School (Primary 1 through 6) equivalent to what is called 'elementary school' in some other countries. This runs for 6 years, and after that, students take the Common Entrance Examination to be admitted into Secondary School, which is the equivalent of 'high school' in some other countries and at the end, you had to take the WAEC (West African Examination Council) exam to graduate from secondary school, and the JAMB (Joint Admissions Matriculation Board) exam to be admitted into colleges.

There is Junior Secondary School (JSS), which lasts 3 years, and then students have to take the JuniorWAEC or the JSSE (Junior Secondary School Exam) to move up to Senior Secondary School (SSS), which also lasts 3 years, after which you take the exams to leave and go to college. After Secondary School, students can enter Universities, Polytechnics, Teacher Colleges, Trade Schools ,etc.
So Nigeria educational system is referred to the 6-3-3-4 System. So after School before a person can start working in Nigeria, you need to have one year of National Youth Service Corp. (NYSC), and most Nigerians go through this right after school that's provided you schooled and graduated from college in Nigeria.

Healthcare in Nigeria.

In Nigeria health care is very expensive, So most people rely on traditional health care. Traditionally health is taken care of by a "medicine man"These medicine-men were trained to know the different herbs and roots, how to prepare them, which ailments they cured, how to administer them, etc. With the incoming of modern medicine, Nigeria have modern hospitals and clinics, so people do rely on nurses and doctors to cure and prevent them from ailments and diseases rather than the medicine men.
However in Nigeria and some other part of the world, people now realizes that hat sometimes herbal remedies can be just as effective as modern medicine, and they don't usually have the long-term side effects that other medications can have. And they have been proven to work in certain situations.
So in Nigeria, sometimes a combination of herbal and modern medicine is what is needed, and both have been evaluated for the treatment of ailments.

marriage and family in nigeria

cont....

t
he second stage is the

ENGAGEMENT

S
ometimes the engagement takes place right after the introduction. In Nigeria after the engagement the couple are seen as married but at times might have to register themselves legally. The engagement ceremony also takes place at the bride's house, and her family is once again responsible for that. the couple dresses in traditionally attire and this differs depending on the tribe because every tribe in Nigeria has a specific attire they are known for. The couple usually gives each other a Bible or Quran, give each other rings, and they may say some words to each other.
The bride usually has her face covered during the ceremony. When the ceremony is over, and everyone goes 'outside' to eat, she waits indoors until she is called out . Then she comes out usually with a friend, still with her face covered, and kneels before her parents so that they may pray for her she then kneels before the groom's parents so that they may pray for her Then she sits by the groom, and this is when she is unveiled, as she sits to eat with everybody.
After the couple is married, they go to the groom's house,The custom is that the bride should arrive at his home before he does, and that she must wash her legs before entering, and be there to meet him when he arrives and this is usually when she changes her last name to that of her husband's.

Some other customs that takes places in some other cultures in Nigeria.
The bride-to-be will kept in a 'fattening room' for a period of time, where she was well fed, and taught how to be a good wife. She would usually come out of the room fatter than before during this process she would 'cleansed' by taking a special bath before going to her husband.

In some cases rather than bringing out the real bride at the engagement party, another woman may come out disguised as the bride to see if the groom is able to tell the difference.

marriage and family in Nigeria.

Marriages in Nigeria usually has 3 stages, the Introduction, engagement and the actual wedding which could be in the church, mosque or court .Nigeria has 3 main tribes the the Yoruba , Igbo and the Hausa and marriages in this tribes are almost the same but have some slight differences but all go through the same 3 stages for couple to be married.

INTRODUCTION

this is the part where the groom's and bride's families introduces themselves to one another and asking the bride's family for their daughter's hand in marriage to their son. the participants of the are the groom and his family, the Olopa Iduro (this translates to 'standing policeman') an appointed speaker by the groom's family, the name differs in the different tribes but this speaker speaks on behalf of the grooms family and it is manditory, then bride and her family , the Olopa Ijoko (this translates to 'sitting policeman'): an appointed speaker by the bride's family;the name also differs in differrent tribe and who also speaks for the bride's family and manditory as well, other families and friends.
The introduction takes place in the bride's house and her family is responsible for the preparations and cost of everything including refreshment, but the groom's family could volunteer to help with some of the cost if they can. Both parties wear traditional attires. So when the groom and his family arrive the are expected to kneels or prostrate for the bride's parents and family.
The groom's family and the bride's family sit on opposite sides of the room, with the bride and groom sitting closer to the center, and the olopa iduro and olopa ijoko sitting in the very middle. the olopa iduro introduces the groom and his family to the bride and her family.
He then brings a proposal letter from the groom's family, usually tied with a pink ribbon, and gives it to the groom's family, through the olopa ijoko.
The letter is read out, and responded to verbally on the spot. Since this is mostly a formality, and it is already known that the couple will marry, there usually is not much rejection at this point.
Then the groom and his family pays a drowry to the bride as a compensation for some of the cost to the bride's parents for raising her. this dowry or money is usually a very little amount, its show a sign of apprecaition for raising a wife for their son, the dowry is very important but the amount doesnt matter.
then i prayers and said for the couple by the bride's parents tot he couples and the groom's parents do the same the refreshment follows.

Nigeria religions

To most Nigerians religion and faith are important aspects of everyday life. It controls the laws , how you think and act, what you belief and value. there are 3 main Religions in Nigeria, the Christians, Muslims and Traditional idol worshiper or could be referred to as pagans. Nigeria is roughly 45% Christians, 45% Muslims and 10% traditional religions and beliefs. thought the government supports the different religions but the past past leaders have usually been Muslims. Christianity and Islamic religion is well known through out the world but the most interesting religion about Nigeria is its traditional religions and beliefs. There are a number of different traditional religions and they usually are specific to the different ethnic groups, the deities are usually the gods and goddesses that the ethnic group believes in, and each ethnic group had a shrine dedicated to the deities that it believed in. these deities they believe do all sort of things and have some unbelievable names like gods of the earth , god of war, god of thunder, god of the sun, god of the rain or weather etc. Each of these gods has there worshipers although they do not have any written documentation to their practices and beliefs, they did rely on a priest to teach them and intervene on there behalf, the priest are usually very trained for these, at times as soon as they are born they are raised to do this task. the priest are respected so much in this ethnic groups because they are seen as the eyes and ears of their god. Some of these deities are represented by objects such as axe, thunderbolts, Iron objects, some has shrines on land and water which represents there dwelling places on earth.

the structure of the story is so good, that you are curious of what going to happen next and it captivate you that you want to read more. the description of the writer is fantastic in way that he uses simple words to express things in way you would understand as soon as you read through the lines. the imagery too is exceptional to me when i was reading the story i never stopped thinking that i was watching a movie, the choice is word was so good and simple, no big vocabulary that makes you stop for a while to think about the meaning of the word to continue, every words has its explanation as you read through the story. the character development was unique, he focused more on the main characters and didn't talk much about characters that weren't relevant to the story so you do not loss focus on the main characters but then way it was simple and understandable without stress. i was able to learn a lot from the writer on how to use simple words to express things in a very unique and decent way and not worry about big words and also the structure of the story how it focus on a format like someone was telling a story and it nevber deviated from that format tell the end.

album review

i am reviewing the album "tp3 reloaded " by Robert Kelly popularly known as R.kelly. and review tje album form the three album review websites , there links is attached: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/4597-tp3-reloaded/, http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/7472723/review/7494149?utm_source=Rhapsody&utm_medium=CDreview, http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/k/kellyr-tp3reloaded.shtml.

After reading the three reviews, i think the three reviews all talked about his life outside of music, mostly his current charges on child pornography and how wonderfully talented he is.

Pitchfork.com review on this album really didn't say much inclusively on the album but emphasized mostly on his lifestyle and how manages through his crisis to make good songs while Rollingstone.com review on this album shallowly talked about his lifestyle and conclusively talked about the tracks and the album as a whole.
Popmatters.com review on this album which is the best review from all three reviews i read i think
i think exclusively talked about everything from his lifestyle to his recent court charges, the ablum and tracks, his collabos and how his fans loves him even if his facing some major challenges in life.

"wishes he came from this type of place."

i think what blue wind meant when he says that Matt Stretton wishes he came from this type of place is that, both he and Matt does wrong things but blue wind does this things with good intention because he has to make a living for him and his family meaning he has a good reasoning for doing what he is doing to survive even though is wrong, but Matt comes from a very comfortable family and should be more responsible but his not, So what blue wind really saying was that Matt stretton wishes he came from this type of place was so his wrong doings maybe or might be justifiable in a way.

Southern polytechinc hornets men soccer ranked #14 in the nation

For the first time in it's brief history, Southern Polytechnic State University Men's Soccer has cracked the Top 15 in the NAIA National Rankings. The latest rankings have placed SPSU as #14.
Since the start of the program in 2007, the Hornets have been making strides toward national recognition. In their second game ever, they tied, then #6 Lee University, 2-2 at Lee University. In 2008, as they went 12-5-1, they beat the #16 and #14 teams in the country and lost to the eventual National Champions, Bethel (TN) University 0-1. Their highest ranking in 2008 was #18.
Now, with an impressive 4-0 start, the Hornets have finally started making some noise. "I think the difference is that we are learning how to win. We have won three hard fought games by one goal. The last two years, we would have lost or tied those games. This year, our team just finds ways to win. The important thing to consider is that it is still early and that there are many tough challenges ahead. To keep this winning ways intact, I believes that we need to stay free of injury and keep doing the little things right. Only time will tell, but for now, the Hornets are proud of their accomplishments.

song "uptown girl"

i chose the song "uptown girl" by westlife which was original written and done by joel billy, the song is basically talking about an upper class lady, She grew up with a more affluent background than the guy, I think there is some insecurity in this song. He talks about it like "maybe someday I'll be good enough for her, maybe she'll like me for me even though I don't have the same background." i also think the song is universal because we can all think of trying for the "unattainable" person and hoping they'll see us as we are. I also close the song because is catchy and straightforward, mostly easy to sing, and is very light-hearted.
Most important i love the song .

18th in the nation

the soccer team is doing very well of which i am part of.. we have played four matches and won all of them. its really exciting to win and being on a winning team. we work very hard to win every match and it all has to do with working very hard in practice and helping each other out as a team.,
our first game of the season was with Andersen university and we defeated them 5-1 and that was my first game for spsu men soccer team and i got a goal on my debut match. i was so happy to have scored after coming in as a substitute. then a one week later we played lee university and we also defeated them 1-0 and i got the only goal of the that highly intensive game, this time it feels even more better to get the only and winning goal against the conference champions, less than 20 hours of rest we had another game against willam Carey university this time it was more difficult because the team didn't have enough time to rest, but we had to push ourselves to winning the game. i am really enjoying my athletic life here at spsu.

Morning Ritual

At times i wish morning never came, most especially Mondays ,Wednesday and Fridays when i have to wake up as early as 7am to prepare for my 8'oclock class. i start very day, on the day before where i have go through my schedule and know what class i would be having on the next day and reading through the last topic we had and preparing my things for the morning, then i set my alarm so even if i felt like not waking up that early, i would be force to wake by the annoying sound of the striking sound from the clock.

Monday mornings are always the most annoying, after a very exciting weekend and fun filled Sunday when sometimes i go partying and very tired, having to go sleep late , then remembering that i have to wake up so early to go for classes the next morning then it begins to torture me.
i wake up by 7am so tired and angry because i didn't have enough time rest but i got to do what i have to do, so I say my morning devotion very sluggishly half asleep and half awake , then go brush my teeth and have a shower, then prepare my break fast wish is usually an instant meal which wouldn't take time, then go dress up and get ready to go for classes. i do not live far from the school like 15 minutes walk, although still tired i have to walk through the hilly road that leads to the school from my apartment, walking very slow and sluggishly as a result of insufficient rest last night, then i get to class and i have to concentrate and try to understand what the profession is trying to teach. i am not a morning person so its so hard for me in class these mornings.
Wednesday and Friday are practically the same thing with Monday only that Tuesday and Thursdays are not very busy days for me so i have a lot of time to rest during the day and waking up isn't really tiring.

Tuesdays and thursday mornings are a entirely different because i dont have class in the morning not until 6 pm so i sleep very well no matter what i did the previous night and wake up very exciting and strong. most times i wake by 10 am, then have my morning devotion actively, make myself a good meal then do some laundering and take a shower then maybe go visit my friends or do some assignment if any or probably go back to bed and have a very fun filled day because i am very active in the day, having not to do anything early morning is just wonderful.
